CREW Leadership Summit Recap by CREW Miami Member Kathryn Arana

Kathryn Arana

Wendy Mann, CEO of CREW Network, kicked off the 2024 CREW Spring Leadership Summit in Charlotte, NC with her opening remarks by sharing a humorous anecdote about her injured toe. She highlighted the importance of "slowing our roles" to reset, drawing parallels between her experience and the need to pause and reflect. This message struck a chord with me—not just because I've had my fair share of foot mishaps, but also because it served as a reminder to take a breather. Wendy's emphasis on self-awareness, both professionally and personally, resonated deeply. The timing of this message, coming midway through the year, presents a valuable opportunity for growth and learning that CREW Miami has provided me through an award to attend.

As we delved into our first leadership development session with Maria Moss, a certified crucial conversations trainer, it was eye-opening to realize that many of us, despite appearing we have it all together, share similar challenges, with one of the most significant being navigating tough conversations. Her insights on having the confidence and clarity of intention, motive, and purpose in our interactions were particularly enlightening. To slow down, pay attention, recognize what needs to be discussed and most important of all, to be clear with yourself and others about what you really want was the overall message. The role-playing exercises brought personal scenarios to mind, highlighting the importance of carrying positive connections even at home.

In another impactful session with Amy K. Hutchens, an international award-winning speaker and writer, she discussed how the power of conversations underline how each interaction shapes the quality of our lives, stating, “Life happens one conversation at a time” and “The quality of your life is the direct outcome of your conversation.” Amy K also discussed how energy is contagious, highlighting that the goal is connection and mutual understanding, and that conflict is an opportunity to connect, heal, assert your voice, and create a better future.

At the council meeting, I learned about CREW’s focus areas that consist of investing in women's leadership, staying up to date with technological advancements, and supporting chapter growth. Encouraging members to build relationships, gain confidence, and enhance personal growth is a testament to the transformative impact of attending these events and reinforced the value of being part of an organization that prioritizes collaboration and knowledge-sharing.

Attending this summit for the first time was a truly impressive experience from the vibrant energy in Charlotte to being surrounded by an inspiring community of women that I had the privilege of meeting through several networking activities. The dedication of CREW Charlotte in encouraging Connection, Learning, and Teaching through the summit was commendable considering this was the largest in person summit to date.

As I conclude this remarkable summit experience, the importance of self-awareness, navigating tough conversations, and fostering meaningful connections reverberate profoundly. To all women in the Commercial Real Estate Industry, I invite you to embrace the spirit of CREW and embark on a fulfilling journey of growth and collaboration with this exceptional group!
